Atlanta Hawks Getting Inside 2008-12-20

Atlanta Hawks Getting Inside 2008-12-20
With two opponents this weekend that look drastically different than they did the last time the Hawks saw them, the scouting reports had to be reworked for Friday's game against Golden State at Philips Arena and for Sunday afternoon's tilt against Detroit.

The Warriors' starting five Friday night consisted of Jamal Crawford, Andris Biedrins, Marco Belinelli, Kelena Azubuike and rookie Rob Kurz. That's nothing like the group the Hawks expected, with Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette both out with injuries. But the Hawks would be wise to respect whoever they face, as they allowed the Warriors' merry band of no names to wreak havoc during their dinner date.

Detroit will come to town with All-Star guard Allen Iverson, but without All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups. The two were swapped for each other in a mega-deal between the Pistons and Denver Nuggets.

"That's why we scout and watch tape," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said with a smile. "That's where our preparation comes into play. You just have to try not to deviate from what it is you do. From a defensive standpoint, everything stays the same. Sure, you tweak on the fly for certain teams. But for the most part you make sure what you do stays sound and you'll be fine."

A healthy dose of respect for the opposition, even those not terribly familiar, might help, too.

HAWKS 115, WARRIORS 99: The Hawks' post-Boston hangover lasted just three quarters this time instead of three games. And while it probably took a little bit longer than expected, and certainly longer than it should have, the Hawks finally figured out the Golden State Warriors in time to salvage 115-99 win at Philips Arena.

The last time the Hawks tried to get back on track after losing to the Celtics they spent three games running in place, losing to New Jersey twice and Indiana before bouncing back from their first defeat of the season Nov. 12 in Boston. Wednesday's 88-85 loss to the Celtics was just as tough to swallow as that earlier setback, but the Hawks only let their funk last the first three quarters Friday night.
