Atlanta Hawks Notes, Quotes 2008-04-06
--The Hawks haven't employed a zone defense very often this season, but they needed to Saturday against Philadelphia. Hawks coach Mike Woodson said he needed to find a way to slow down the tempo against the run-and-gun 76ers, especially after being run ragged by them the night before in a loss in Atlanta. "I though it really helped us tonight," Woodson said. "We have to use it in certain situations. This being a back-to-back game, we had to use it to give ourselves a chance at dictating the pace. They tried to pressure us in the second half and force us into mistakes to maybe speed the game up. But we kept our composure and took care of business."

--Hawks reserve guard Salim Stoudamire made a rare appearance in the first half Saturday, playing quality minutes off the bench in relief of both Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson. Stoudamire finished his night with six points and two assists. More important, he gave the Hawks good minutes off the bench that haven't been there, for whatever reason, in recent weeks. "I had to be ready," Stoudamire said. "We're fighting for a playoff spot and I just had to be prepared to help my team and not hurt them." Woodson said he had been contemplating using Stoudamire the past couple games but finally pulled the trigger Saturday. "He met the challenge," Woodson said. "He was ready to play. I told him before the game to be ready and he went out there and gave us some positive minutes."

--The Hawks have no one to blame but themselves for their woeful performance from the foul line Saturday. The Hawks went just 19-for-27 from the free throw line, ruining any chance they had to run away with a game they controlled for most of the night. The 76ers didn't fare much better, making just 18 of their 24 shot from the free throw line. "I'm just glad they didn't decide the game," said Josh Smith, who went 6-for-10 from the floor. "Both teams missed a few. But we mad them when we needed to."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We controlled the tempo. When you come in somebody else's territory, you have to control the tempo and that's what we're able to do." -- Hawks forward Josh Smith on the Hawks' aggressive start Saturday.
