Atlanta Hawks Notes, Quotes 2008-04-21
--Hawks forward Josh Smith had a rough Saturday night at the team hotel, struggling to get much sleep while battling an itchy allergic reaction to something he ate at the team hotel.

Sunday night wasn't much better, as he picked up two quick fouls and sat the entire second quarter of his first playoff game, the Hawks' humbling 104-81 loss to Boston at TD Banknorth Garden.

"I was too amped up and I knew it was going to happen," Smith said after scoring just six points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots in his 24 minutes of action. "Now that I have a game under my belt, I'll be able to come back under more control and play a better game. But I never could find my rhythm (Sunday).

"By the time I got back in the game they were all over us and it was tough to get going."

--Hawks coach Mike Woodson made it a point to break out the 2004 NBA championship ring he won as an assistant coach in Detroit.

It was a blatant motivational ploy, one he said he couldn't resist.

"We couldn't have picked a better place to come and start a playoff series," Woodson said as he walked off the floor from the Hawks' near two-hour shoot-around practice Sunday morning. "I mean, with all the banners they've achieved in this building, it's simply amazing. But the bottom line is this, no one remembers the eighth-seed or the second or third. People remember the team that wins the title.

"I know (Celtics coach) Doc (Rivers) is pushing to win a championship in his locker room and I'm pushing the same thing. I'm not in it just to hold the eighth spot. I want to win a title for our fans and our city and I want my players to be able to experience that as well."

--Josh Smith and Mario West were the only two players to come up with an answer to Woodson's going bald for the playoffs. Both players, and Atlanta natives, sported freshly cut Mohawks for Sunday's playoff opener.

West had his hair cut before the Hawks left for Boston. Smith left Atlanta Saturday without his new style but showed up Sunday with the new look.

"We're calling it the Atlanta Mohawk," Smith said laughing. "As you can see, it didn't take us long to come up with that one. Actually, we talked about doing something like this as a team but I knew (Josh Childress) and Joe (Johnson) weren't about to do anything crazy to their hair."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The stat line's terrible. I didn't help my team at all. I'll take the blame for this." -- Hawks point guard Mike Bibby, on his awful showing in Game 1.
