--With captain and All-Star G Joe Johnson 1,100 miles away and under the weather, the Hawks needed someone to fill the void against Minnesota Wednesday night at Target Center."It won't be one guy alone," Hawks F Marvin Williams said. "You're talking about 22 points a night and the guy who we run basically all our sets through. So it has to be a thing where everybody raises their game a little bit to make up for it."
Johnson missed practice Monday and Tuesday and did not make the trip here because of a viral infection. Hawks coach Mike Woodson was holding out hope that Johnson might rejoin the team in time for Friday's game in Charlotte.
Whether Johnson makes it to Charlotte or not, he said, it's high time that others like Williams raise their games up to another level.
"Marvin's actually played really well since coming back from the (two-game absence because of a) concussion," Woodson said. "All you want is for everybody that plays to play well and that we win.
"Because there's no excuses here just because a guy is out. We've stayed pretty even when other guys have been out and we have to do the same without Joe."
--Mike Woodson likes G Mike Bibby's shot at capturing the title in the three-point shooting contest during NBA All-Star Weekend, and it has nothing to do wit the home city advantage Bibby will experience in his native Phoenix.
"Sure he's got a chance," Woodson said. "He's not afraid to take a big shot. And he's been shooting it as well as anybody over the course of this season. So sure, I'm taking my guy in a contest."
Bibby was announced Wednesday afternoon as one of the contestants for the long-shot showcase during All-Star Weekend.
--C Al Horford's return from a 12-game absence got off to a rough start. He was whistled for an offensive foul 12 seconds into the game in what was his first game action in more than three weeks.
Woodson is keeping a tight watch on Horford's minutes as he tries to get back in basketball shape. He played the first five minutes Wednesday night before being replaced by Zaza Pachulia. Horford ended up playing 25 minutes on the night.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "You either step up and push on when your big gun goes down or get out of the way and get rolled over. No offense to Joe, but we're more than a one-man team around here. We'll step up and fight." -- F Josh Smith, on playing without captain and All-Star Joe Johnson.
