Atlanta Hawks Notes, Quotes 2009-04-07
--Hawks coach Mike Woodson can't help but think about the way the Hawks played their first six games of the season.

Defense was the name of their game. Unselfishness was the rule and not the exception. The team played with a purpose that its first six opponents, and actually the seventh as well, hadn't seen out of these Hawks before then.

Woodson is hoping his team can rekindle that same fire in the final six games of the season.

"We started this season 6-0 and playing together on both ends of the floor, and that's what we have to get back to," Woodson said. "These guys started the season fighting for something, and now that it's within reach, they have to finish it off."

The first six and final six started the same way, against an Orlando team that was picked to win the Southeast Division.

The Magic had that honor locked up before they got to Philips Arena on Saturday night.

But just like the Hawks, the Magic are still fighting for the playoff spot they'd like. They came into Saturday's game percentage points behind Boston for the No. 2 spot.

"Everybody's fighting for something these days," Woodson said. "We're no different from any of these other (playoff) teams right now. We're all in the same boat."

--The Hawks were at their defensive best in the first half Saturday night.

The Magic didn't get many uncontested shots from the floor, and when they did, they misfired more than they connected, shooting just 13-for-45 from the floor and 5-for-19 from beyond the 3-point line.

The .289 shooting percentage from the floor was the second-worst field-goal shooting performance in a half by a Hawks opponent this season.

--The Hawks followed up that stellar defensive effort before halftime with an equally inept offensive performance of their own in the third quarter.

They made just six of their 21 shots (.269) in the quarter. And half of the baskets came from Josh Smith, who was 3-for-6. Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby and Mo Evans were a combined 3-for-14.

--Hawks center Al Horford won the fourth annual Jason Collier Memorial Trophy, which goes to the player who is the most active in the community.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You don't go into panic mode. You just have to bounce back and try to get these games on the road, and win out the rest of the season." -- Hawks F Josh Smith, on how the team should respond after losing three straight this late in the season.
