DRAFT REPORT: The Hawks did not have a single pick in the draft for the first time in the franchise's Atlanta history.
BIGGEST NEEDS: The Hawks have filled just about every available space on the roster, save for a quality backup for starting F Marvin Williams. Another big man wouldn't hurt either, but the Hawks would be wise to wait until the training camp shakeout comes and see what kinds of big men fall off the end of other team's rosters. FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Hawks wrapped up their summer free agent haul by matching the Memphis Grizzlies' $58 million offer sheet to F Josh Smith. They also added G Mo Evans, G Flip Murray and C Randolph Morris.
PLAYER NOTES:
--The guy drafted before Marvin Williams (Andrew Bogut) and the two guys drafted after Williams (Deron Williams and Chris Paul) have all gotten huge contract extensions this summer. But if Williams is worried about where he stands, he's not letting it show.
"It's not even on my mind. I saw where (Andrew) Bogut, Chris (Paul) and Deron (Williams) all got those extensions. They worked hard for that. And I'm happy for them. But from a personal standpoint I haven't concerned myself with that right now at all. I love Atlanta. And I'll let God take care of everything else."
--The Hawks have added roster players for training camp that will surely make things interesting. Both G Thomas Gardner and F Othello Hunter will put added pressure on G Mario West, F Jeremy Richardson and C Solomon Jones in their quest to maintain their spots.
But anyone who thinks he is going to push West out of the way without a furious fight better rethink those plans. West, a competitor in every sense of the word, has been a fixture at the Hawks' practice facility this summer. And he won't be cast aside quietly.
