PLAYER NEWS: --C Al Horford continued his world travels begun early last month (in Mexico City with Basketball Without Borders) in Puerto Rico with the Dominican national team in the FIBA Americas qualifier. Horford played alongside fellow Dominican-NBA stars Charlie Villanueva and Francisco Garcia. After years as an international afterthought, the DR team suddenly looks like it could develop into a factor with its NBA nucleus.
--F Othello Hunter is one of several players already committed to attend the Hawks' training camp next month in hopes of earning a permanent spot in the locker room. He joins a growing list of camp invitees that already includes rookie free agent Garrett Siler, Frank Robinson and Courtney Sims. Hunter made the team that way last season but will have a much tougher road ahead of him this season with veterans like Joe Smith and Jason Collins already on the roster.
--F Josh Smith finished last season and went straight into a heavy workout regimen that included weight work and daily sessions to polish all parts of his game. But the bulk Smith was carrying earlier this summer is gone now. He said he decided to shed a little weight and work more on his cardio as training camp neared. With lofty goals of averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, Smith said he needs to be in top form from the first day of training camp.
Jeff Teague, G, 6-1, Wake Forest (first round) -- The Hawks had to have a young point guard added to the mix with the loss of Acie Law IV. And in a draft dripping with point guard talent, Teague could prove to be a steal at 19.
Sergiy Gladyr, G, 6-5, Ukraine (second round) -- Hawks fans will have to search YouTube for clips of Gladyr the next couple of years, because the sweet shooting guard is likely to remain in Europe to develop.
