Atlanta Hawks Roster Report 2009-08-21

--C Al Horford spent the first week of August in Mexico City as one of the league's ambassadors for the Basketball Without Borders program. It was an eye-opening experience for the Dominican-born Horford, who had never seen Mexico City in person. He said he was stunned at the sheer size of the city and to see so many hoops-crazed youngsters tuned into the NBA.

--C Randolph Morris has had perhaps the most startling summer of any player on the Hawks' roster. He's shed some 30 pounds and is down to 265 pounds, the lightest he said he's been since early in his high school career. Morris, a seldom-used reserve last season, is heading into the final year of his contract with the Hawks and has to make an impression to stay in the league. That's why he worked out at the Hawks' rookie/free-agent mini-camp last month and participated in Tim Grgurich's annual camp in Las Vegas the first week of August.

--G Mario West has a non-guaranteed deal with the Hawks for this season and could come to training camp if he doesn't find a better deal elsewhere. West has maximized his opportunity with the Hawks the past two seasons, but has slipped into dangerous territory for an undrafted free agent without a permanent role. Now that he's in his third season, when the veteran's minimum salary is roughly $1 million, teams will look for a cheaper option for a player that rarely sees the floor.

--C Al Horford got a clean bill of health for the summer after struggling in the playoffs with an ankle injury.

--G Joe Johnson has finally had a chance to rest his injured left foot that Hawks coach Mike Woodson said bothered him more than anyone let on during the playoffs.

Jeff Teague, G, 6-1, Wake Forest (first round) -- The Hawks had to have a young point guard added to the mix with the loss of Acie Law IV. And in a draft dripping with point guard talent, Teague could prove to be a steal at 19.

Sergiy Gladyr, G, 6-5, Ukraine (second round) -- Hawks fans will have to search YouTube for clips of Gladyr the next couple of years, because the sweet shooting guard is likely to remain in Europe to develop.
