FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Hawks have their own free agents do deal with, namely restricted free agent forwards Josh Smith and Josh Childress. But they also have to locate another shooter and at least two veteran big men to help fill out a rotation that was woefully thin in each of the past two seasons, even before the February trade that sent Shelden Williams and Lorenzen Wright to Sacramento.
--Hawks G Acie Law IV is gearing up for his second NBA season with an offseason workout regimen that began just a couple of weeks after the Hawks' season ended in that Game 7 loss to Boston in the first round of the playoffs. Law has been on the floor and in the weight room at least five days a week since then. And he's eager to prove himself to all those folks he believes are questioning his game after an uneven and injury-plagued rookie season.
Law has had company at the Hawks' practice facility. Both Zaza Pachulia and Solomon Jones have shown up consistently for workouts with the Hawks' staff this summer. Pachulia resurfaced in the playoffs after a nearly season-long slumber to play some of his best basketball. Jones, who only dipped his toes into the playoff waters, is pushing for a larger role in coach Mike Woodson's rotation this season.
--Hawks captain and All-Star Joe Johnson will save his body for next season after not being selected for the Olympic team active roster for Beijing. Johnson is on the 30-man Team USA roster but hasn't played in any competition in two summers. That's good news for the Hawks, who need for him to be rested and healthy for the start of training camp in October.
