Belinelli traded for George, cash 2009-07-31

The Warriors cleared out some of their backcourt logjam and found an experienced presence to help balance a youth-filled roster, acquiring wing Devean George and money from Toronto on Thursday in exchange for guard Marco Belinelli.

The move acts as a vote of confidence for second-year guard Anthony Morrow, as it should open more minutes for him. The team still has guards Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Stephen Curry, Kelenna Azubuike, Acie Law, Speedy Claxton and possibly restricted free agent C.J. Watson. General manager Larry Riley said he's not done dealing.

"We'd like to add another piece," he said, "and we're still working."

Throughout the offseason, Riley has said he wants to find an experienced post player, and his last two moves could make that easier. Picking up Law, Claxton and George in trades gives the Warriors about $10 million in contracts that expire at season's end, and moving Law and/or Claxton would make sense given the Warriors' glut of point guards.

Toronto will pay most of George's $1.6 million salary. The 31-year-old, who is 6-foot-8, played the last three seasons with Dallas after spending his first seven years with the Lakers. He was obtained by the Raptors this month in the Shawn Marion deal. He averaged 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.5 minutes last season. He has appeared in 86 playoff games, including four trips to the NBA Finals.

Belinelli, 23, would have been hard-pressed to find minutes, though he averaged 8.9 points and 2.1 assists in 21 minutes a game last season. Originally selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, Belinelli's career averages are 6.2 points and 1.4 assists in 15 minutes a game.
